The Allen-Bradley 1771-CFM is a configurable flowmeter module designed for PLC-5 systems. It interfaces with turbine flowmeters, magnetic pickups, and single-channel shaft encoders. This module calculates flow and shaft speed with high accuracy. It supports 4 digital inputs and 4 digital outputs. Operators can use it in many industries like power generation, oil, gas, and food processing. The 1771-CFM simplifies programming and saves PLC memory. It directly replaces 1771-QRC and 1771-QRD modules without ladder logic changes.
Application Scenarios
This module works in power generation, oil and gas, automotive, and pipeline industries. It measures flow from turbine meters and magnetic pickups. It also calculates shaft speed from encoders. The device operates in totalizer modes or high-resolution frequency mode. Users can select non-resettable totalizer, resettable totalizer, high-resolution frequency, or direction sensor mode. The module controls up to 4 outputs based on input values. It processes signals up to 100 kHz with a maximum processing time of 5.5 ms.

The 1771-CFM module has 4 digital input channels for magnetic pickups (50 mV to 200 V AC peak) and TTL-compatible signals (4-40 V DC). It also accepts Bently 3300 proximity pickups (5 & 8 mm). The output channels operate at 5-40 V DC (user supplied). The module uses a single slot with a backplane current of 1.0 Amps. Its scan time ranges from 1.3 to 5 ms. The waveform and module scan time are adjustable. Storage temperature is -40 to 185°F (-40 to 85°C). The module weighs 1.9 lbs (0.9 kg) and has dimensions 3.5 x 6.5 x 2.0 inches (89 x 165 x 51 mm). It includes conformal coating for protection.
Installation & Maintenance Guide
Install the 1771-CFM in any single slot of a PLC-5 chassis. Connect the wiring arm (1771-WN) for external connections. Ensure the backplane current does not exceed 1.0 Amp. Use user-supplied DC supply for outputs (5-40 V DC). Configure the module via software for the desired mode. The module sends diagnostic information to the PLC processor. Operate the module at 0 to 60°C (32 to 140°F). No special maintenance is required beyond periodic cleaning. Replace the module only with an identical model.
